Breaking Up with Barrett: The English Brothers, Book 1

Regnery (The Vixen and the Vet) underwhelms with this anemic Pretty Woman–esque contemporary romance. Emily Edwards is the daughter of the gardener at the English family’s Haverford Park estate. As she struggles to complete her Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania, she earns a little extra money posing as the fiancée of Barrett English, a well-known business tycoon. Unfortunately for her peace of mind, her feelings for Barrett are all too real, and she decides to end the deception before her heart breaks. Manor-born Barrett, reluctant to cross the class divide between them, must decide what’s more important to him: business and reputation, or the woman he loves. Flashes of excellent storytelling are overshadowed by rushed character development and stereotypical situations. The skeleton of an exceptional novel is present, but it sadly lacks flesh.
